Water Management Program

Medallion Landscape Water Management Program is based on the California Water Board’s Best Management Practices (BMP) for water usage in the landscape.  We focus on three areas of water use efficiency:

Irrigation Hardware

      • Water meters
      • Controllers
      • Components

 Irrigation Management

      • Water application
      • Water penetration
      • System repairs and upgrades

 Water Efficient Plants

      • List of plants for your area

Irrigation Hardware

Dedicated Irrigation Water Meters

Dedicated Irrigation Water Meters are one of the most useful tools for an Irrigation Manager.  These meters help  track water usage in the landscape and detect water leaks in the irrigation system.  If you do not have separate dedicated irrigation water meters already on your property,  you should consider installing them.  Without them it is very difficult to manage your irrigation water use accurately.

Irrigation Controllers

There is an entire new generation of controllers on the market called Weather Based Controllers or ET Controllers.  ET stands for Evapor-Transportation, which is the measurement of evaporated water in the landscape and the water transpiring from the plant.  These controllers record the information for the current day and calculate based on this information and the weather condition what the plants watering requirements are.  Reports have shown that these controllers  can reduce a property water usage by up to 25%.

For those clients who  still have the conventional controllers, Medallion Landscape managers and irrigation technicians  will program these controllers so that they apply the appropriate amounts of water to each zone, depending on plant type, slope, soil type and sun exposure.

Irrigation Components

When talking Components, we are talking about the sprinklers.  Similar to the controllers, there is a whole new generation of sprinkler technologies that are being made with the sole purpose of applying water more efficiently and accurately.

For example, you can convert a spray type system into a drip system for your shrub planters and bubblers to your trees, thus reducing your water use bydelivering the water only where it is needed, at the plant root zone.  There are sprinklers that will allow water to be applied on lawns at a lower volume allowing water to penetrate into the soil with less runoff and less water waste.   Nozzles that include Matched Precipitation Rates (MPR), will match the amount of water being applied equally throughout each sprinkler within a station.  Lastly, sprinklers with check valves  reduce water loss when a broken sprinkler runs during an irrigation cycle.

Irrigation Management

Water Application

Proper programming of the irrigation controllers and the use of proper irrigation components is the foundation of efficient water application.

Programming a conventional controller to irrigate  in the evening and early morning (before 8:00am) will reduce water loss due o to evaporation.  Selecting alternate programs for various foliage water requirements,  and using shorter watering times with 2 or 3 start times per zone, will  allow better water penetration and thus reduce water loss and costs.

With ET Controllers, Medallion Landscape will configure and program the controllers based on landscape data and weather satellites.  These controllers use this information along with the weather satellite information to determine the water use for the day and how to apply it.  In addition, an irrigation technician would monitor and make any necessary adjustments  in the event there are any  micro-climate  variations during the initial start up period.

Water Penetration and Retention

The  goal of water management is ensure the water is aborsing into the soil and  accessible to the plant.  To achieve this, the water must penetrate and be absorbed into the soil.  Often in a landscape situation, the natural soil porosity is lost and water begins to run off instead of penetrating the soil.  You can help to eliminate this problem and reduce runoff by aerating and using products to improve soil porosity, such as Gypsum and Invigorate.

Another important addition to your planter beds is mulch.  Mulch  assists the water to retain in the soil, add organic matter back into the soil, and reduces weed growth.  Medallion Landscape  proposes annual mulch bids to all our clients.  We have several different environmentally friendly mulches to choose from for this process.

System Repairs and Upgrades

Broken pipes and poor irrigation design are the largest contributors to water waste in an irrigation system.  A single broken lateral pipe dispensing  20 gallons a minute will generate a loss of 300 gallons of water in one fifteen minute run cycle.  A broken mainline leaking continuously a half a gallon of water a minute, twenty-four hours a day, will lose 720 gallons of water per day.  Also having dry spots is anindication that the system is not working as efficient as it should.  Therefore having to turn up the irrigation to eliminate dry spots wastes water on the remainder of the landscape.  Consequently,  repairs to an irrigation system is one of the most important things that be done  to eliminate water waste and ultimately save money. MedallionLandscape provides two complete irrigation system reviews  per year which includeproposals on any repairs that may need to be completed.   In addition, for an addition charge, Medallion Landscape can perform Wet Checks during the highest water use period of the year, which is normallyMay thru September.  During a Wet Check, an Irrigation Technician turns on each station and quickly looks for any obvious visible problems, such as geysers and broken pipes.  These Wet Checks have shown to help in reducing water loss throughout the year.

Water Efficient Plants

More than often, clients believe  they should  plant Native plants in order to have conserve water.    There are many areas around the world that have climates similar to  the Bay area andCalifornia.  These types of plants  do well in the Bay Area, and increase the selection of water efficient plant material that can be used in our design process, all the while adding curb appeal to your landscape.  Addiontially, many of these plants are recognized by several water agencies around the Bay Area as water efficient.

What People Are Saying About Us:

"Working with Medallion Landscape is truly a pleasure — I actually call it a “business partnership”. They offer assistance above and beyond the standard landscape service; they have created landscape improvement plans that exceeded expectations, they handled all steps from planning, executing and regular follow up to ensure satisfaction. They also handle city requirements as part of their service.

They are very knowledgeable regarding the proper plant selections, the type of soil, locations sun or shade, irrigation limitations, and sustainability for long term flowering foliage.

They are willing to invest the time to meet and plan, even if the plan maybe spread out over a lengthy time period. They are quick to respond when necessary and support the sense of community through their actions.

I really appreciate the professionalism they have for their business partners."
